It's likely that every roll of every weapon was at least in part influenced by their work. Perhaps they published content about how the sandbox itself functions. They may have reviewed a weapon and shared specific insights as to why and how a particular roll could be effective. Of course, we're heavily influenced by the well-known Destiny content creators who focus on sandbox analysis. "You all wrote out all these rolls and thoughts?" Many of us have been around since 2014, all of us have been playing for some time, are pretty geeky about the Destiny sandbox and take our gear talk wayyy too seriously. Someone jokingly referred to it as "The Sliflist" and it stuck □Ī few of us over on the Disco Technical Destiny Slack. The chances of anyone maining that roll are basically none, but maybe it's just fun to play with for a bit? "Sliflist?" When Hip-Fire Grip was buffed, it was totally possible to reasonably hip-fire First In, Last Out. Are you ever about to load in to an activity and just throw on whatever is handy because you have 192 energy weapons? Welcome to satisficing! "A hip-fire slug shotgun? Are you joking? Why would this be highlighted?"Ī secondary objective is indicate which rolls, even if they aren't the "meta", would be interesting to use in both PvE and PvP. Pro-tip: this phenomenon is known as " satisficing". Remember though, your vault space is limited: the more in it, the less likely you use any of it you simply have too much to choose from so you end up utilizing only a small set of what you have. I know, I know, some perks seem too good to part with. "But it's ! Are you SURE it's not a good roll?" It's attempting to highlight perk combos that play off of each other or that make a solid roll even better. The Sliflist isn't trying to tell you every possible perk that might happen to be good in isolation. This is part of what makes Destiny so fun! You don't need a DIM wishlist to tell you that Kill Clip is a decent perk you already know that. With the exception of Adrenaline Junkie □ a case can be made for nearly every Destiny perk in isolation. That's a great perk why doesn't the Sliflist tell me to keep it?" As the wishlist is updated, so are the thoughts that go in to each roll. The Sliflist generally has a pretty high bar so that we're only keeping the good stuff. If you're putting in decent hours, using DIM and looking up custom wishlists, you likely have a pretty chonky vault. The Sliflist's goal is to do just that: to tell you when a related set of perks come together to make an interesting roll. Wouldn't it be awesome if someone kept up to date on the state of the Destiny sandbox, watched all the weapon testing and review videos so you didn't have to? And then they went and created a whole bunch of rolls to get you started and keep your vault clean?

This is definitely a multitasking tool: The robotic arm adjusts to accommodate different sizes and textures so you aren't limited to apples. We like that this model doesn't take up too much space on the counter and includes an electrical adapter that can be plugged into a normal outlet, though it will also work on four (AA) batteries. An electric peeler makes it easier to prepare the fresh fruits and veggies you might otherwise avoid because of the work of hand-peeling. This is a great tool for people who don’t like to manually peel apples or other fruit and vegetables. Size: 12 x 2 x 8 inches | Weight: 2 pounds | Method of Operation: Hand crank | Dishwasher Safe: Hand wash recommended We also appreciated that the blade retained its sharpness after hours of peeling. The handle is of the traditional wooden dowel-shaped design and the parts are engineered to work hard and last a long time. Each vegetable or fruit requires a slight adjustment in terms of strength used during the peeling, and the blade has to be adjusted as well. We also successfully peeled a large sweet potato and carrot but noted it works best for apples. Coring is simple as well (took about 5 seconds). The speed depends on how fast you turn the crank, but it took us around 8 seconds to peel and slice a small apple. That all said, it efficiently peeled, cored, and sliced apples (and it can perform all those functions simultaneously). We noticed it can be a bit fussy to adjust if you've never used one of these before, but after it’s set, it’s ready to go without adjustment. With an old-fashioned feel and look, it brings a bit of nostalgia to the task of peeling apples, potatoes, and large carrots, but it’s best for peeling and slicing in larger amounts because of the setup. This classic cast-iron peeler is exceptionally sturdy due to its construction, as well as the C-clamp used to secure it to a table or countertop. Requires countertop deep enough for clamp Size: 11.3 x 6.8 x 1.25 inches | Weight: 8.6 ounces total | Method of Operation: Manual | Dishwasher Safe: Yes Lastly, the julienne made even carrot strips, perfect for our red cabbage and apple salad. Since serrated blades are better for softer fruits and vegetables-think peaches, plums, and tomatoes-we used it on a soft Roma tomatoes before making a sauce. The swivel also swiftly and quickly peeled thick-skinned sweet potatoes, with barely any work on our end. The "regular" straight-edged peeler tackled apple slices and Yukon potatoes for mashing. No matter what we tested, this set made peeling a breeze. The full set does take up more room than a single peeler, but we appreciate that each has a blade guard to keep your fingers safe. This ergonomic Oxo set comes with three different style blades-a swivel, a julienne, and a serrated-so you'll have peelers year-round for every recipe. Sure, you can only have one peeler with a straight blade, but it's also nice to have options. Size: 5.8 x 12.4 x 2.9 inches | Weight: 2.2 pounds | Method of Operation: Electric | Dishwasher Safe: Yes Still, this is a particularly versatile attachment as it was able to slice any veggie or fruit we tried-even dense sweet potatoes. The peeler worked well for our apple crisps, but we did note that irregular shapes (like a sweet potato) can cause it to skip small sections of peel. After some trial and error, we were able to core apples successfully and get uniform pieces that were easy to remove. The slicing and spiralizing functions performed extremely well and will definitely save you time in the kitchen. We used the attachment to peel, slice, and spiralize apples for apple crisps, and found all the blades to be extremely sharp. The parts include a fine spiralizer, a medium spiralizer, a spiral slice (small core), a spiral slice (large core), and a peeler. As with all of the KitchenAid attachments, this one is sturdy and hardworking. If you already own a KitchenAid mixer, this attachment makes peeling, coring, and slicing apples and other fruit and vegetables a breeze. For serious cooks and bakers, the KitchenAid mixer and its attachments are some of the best investments you can make. The composition references the romantic tradition in which the sublime, achieved through nature, was considered among the most important goals and purposes of art.Īt the center of the giant work is a small drawing of a house set in the vastness of nature. In Kelley’s hands, the house and mountains are presented at a humble rather than heroic scale, and a hallucinatory burst of woodgrain and energy waves dominates the frame. Here, Kelley’s sublime is offered not by the transcendent, idealistic pursuit of romanticism, but by the aesthetics of a psychedelic poster, an expansion as achievable through mindset as through environment.Have you ever wondered where the world’s most famous artists went to school? Many studied at one (or more) of these six art academies. Let’s go back to school with some great artists! The schools on this list have trained the most famous painters, sculptors, and architects in Western art history. Palazzo Carpegna in Rome, Museum and Accademia Nazionale di San Luca, Rome, Italy. Photo by Warburg via Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 3.0).Įurope’s first art academy started in 16th century Italy. Up until this time, European artists had learned their craft as apprentices in established masters’ workshops. The idea of learning art and architecture in a school was, therefore, something new. The Accademia di San Luca opened in 1593, making it Europe’s second-ever art academy. It is named after Saint Luke, the patron saint of artists. Unlike the Florentine version that preceded it, this Roman academy still serves its original function today. It began, in part, as a professional association for artists. During the Middle Ages, Europe thought of its painters and sculptors as nothing more than craftsmen. However, Renaissance artists yearned to be seen as respected intellectuals and luminaries instead. Establishing art academies like the Accademia di San Luca, which replaced the Rome artist trade guild, aided in this endeavor by associating art with learning rather than manual skill. As France’s national art academy, it is the most celebrated art school in Europe. École des Beaux-Art s simply means “school of fine arts”, so many French-speaking art academies carry this name. However, the term popularly refers to the Parisian school, just as Notre Dame typically refers to the Parisian church. For other uses, see The Hero's Journey (disambiguation). We'll start peeling it all apart next week.įor this week I'll leave you with one final question - what ordinary world might you be living in? And what's the next step? That' and more, next week.įrom charleskunken."The Hero's Journey" redirects here. But that's what best friends are for, right? Earthquakes, alien invasions, and kidnappings also fall into this category, 'by chance'. When I got a literal call during the spring of my senior year to come over and work on an economics project on a Friday afternoon, that was an example of 'by chance' (and a great example of needing to be more suspicious about things that sound to good to be true). There's two basic ways to get launched into an adventure: deliberately & by chance. Next week we'll start to talk about HJ#2 - The Call To Adventure. "It's not 1-in-a-million chance you'll do something great, it's 1-in-a-million people who actually give themselves the permission to try." - MeĪnd trying is what it's all about. Here's a quote to carry you on into the weekend: We'll talk more on that some point down the line. On that note, I've also realize that while every story is a Hero's Journey, every story is also a heist. The only way I'll find out why it didn't sell a million copies is by putting it out there and then applying that knowledge to book #2. I have to publish the heist so that I can reconcile where this project will actually fall between the two. #2 is critical because it lets us be objective about our level of craft without getting sad. ' Knowing' that we're different is what allows us to dig in on a long-term project. #1 is the heart of the entrepreneurial spirit. It's my head and I make the rules, got it? If you asked me which one I believe more, I believe both, 100%. it's probably going to sell a couple hundred copies (due to the fact that I'm going to send out a couple hundred individual text messages once its finished, ahem) once this thing is complete it will go on to sell millions of copies, and probably become a movie, and likely a Netflix series in which I have a cameo that morphs into a recurring guest role. i have two competing thoughts I am finding useful so I thought I'd share: That's probably the most exciting thing in life, knowing there's an adventure ahead. Perhaps you find yourself in an ordinary world again and don't even know it. You've experienced an ordinary world at least once - life before joining this newsletter. The end of one is the beginning of the next. The ordinary world is not a place we leave once, it's the starting point before every new adventure. Luke Skywalker would still be chilling on that dessert planet, Lonestar would still be cruising the galaxy in the Eagle 5, and I'd still be in 12th grade and would have never been tricked into 'taking pot'. It's the thing the hero would keep doing if not for the story. You can't have an adventure without it, by definition. We're gonna use that project to talk about some stuff over the next bunch of weeks, or until I get bored.īefore any adventure ever takes place there is a status quo. Joseph Campbell 's most famous work, 'The Hero With A Thousand Faces' established the theory of 'The Hero's Journey,' or the 'HJ' as I like to call it for short.Įarlier in the year I tried to recreate the 12 stages of the HJ using Instagram stories and if you ask me - I succeeded. While VectorStyle can do a lot, it doesn't have the pixel tools that you get with Affinity and Photoshop. It does offer some of the tools that Affinity Designer lacks, so it's worth considering if you need them, but we find it's usually possible to find a work around.Īnother downside is that unlike Adobe Illustrator and Affinity Designer, you don't have that wider ecosystem that lets you switch quickly and easily between different apps (with Affinity you have that in Affinity Photo, Publisher and Designer). However, while we found some of the unique filters and tools certainly very interesting, priced at $95, VectorStyler is twice the price of Affinity Designer, our top pick as the best non-subscription vector software. We found the user interface to be very easy to understand, and tools like the warp options are very intuitive. It can open and import Illustrator files, and you can import AI brush collections as well as create vector brushes from artwork and dynamically link brush content to editable artwork. Its big selling point is a wide range of scalable vector brushes plus the inclusion of some of the tools that are missing in other alternatives to Adobe Illustrator, such as shape builder, a blend tool and pattern tool. Initially available only for Mac, it's now available for Windows too. VectorStyler is a relative newcomer among the best vector software. See our full CorelDRAW review for a more detailed evaluation. If you do opt for Corel, the good news is that there's no issue with importing and exporting AI, PSD and PDF files. We think a lot of that comes down to preference and what you're familiar with, however, and we'd recommend taking out the free trial to see how you find it. The package includes a lot of the same capabilities as Adobe Illustrator and Affinity Serif, and fans of CorelDRAW insist that its interface is easier to use. It also now has an iPad app and a browser-based app as well as the Windows and Mac desktop software, giving you more flexibility in how you work.ĬorelDRAW Standard and CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2021 have fairly steep upfront costs, with list prices at $299 and $549 respectively, but the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2022 costs around $22 per month, including the pixel-based CorelPHOTO-PAINT and a RAW image editor for a similar price to an Adobe single-app subscription. It takes a while to get your head around the different options, but we reckon CorelDRAW is now actually the most flexible graphic design software, since you can choose between buying the software outright or subscribing for access to newer features. The subscription model gives you access to the latest features, which include dynamic asset management and a faster adjustments docker for photo editing. Just to make things more confusing, the latter itself comes in two versions, with CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2021 available for a one-off payment but the new 2022 version requiring a subscription. It's now available in two formats: in CorelDRAW Standard, which is marketed to amateur enthusiasts, and CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, which is a larger package of tools aimed at professional designers. Once the market leader in vector design, CorelDRAW lost some of its popularity to Adobe Illustrator, but it still has legions of loyal fans and it continues to upgrade its offering to keep up with most of the features offered by competitors. Still more expensive than some newer alternatives See our full Affinity Designer review for more details. There are no subscription fees, but you still get software updates when they're released, making it a lot more affordable in the long term, or even medium term. But the best part, of course, is that you only have to make a one-time payment, and a fairly reasonable one at that. It can handle both Illustrator AI and Photoshop PSD files, so you don't have to worry about compatibility if colleagues or clients work with Adobe's software. In fact, Affinity Designer even offers some tools you don't get on Illustrator, such as infinite redos and one million per cent-plus zoom, and we found that it tends to run faster than Adobe illustrator too. Available for a one-off payment, Affinity Designer comes closest out of all the software we've tried in matching the breadth of Illustrator's feature set. The most notable contender is Serif's Affinity Designer. If you're put off by the hefty monthly or annual cost of Adobe's subscription model, there are now some serious alternatives as the best graphic design software for vector design.
